Seismic anisotropy
Seismic anisotropy in Earth's oceanic lithosphere and in the
mantle wedge above subduction zones is associated with crystallographic
preferred orientations of olivine. Experiments at high pressure and temperature
suggest that a pressure of ~3 GPa can induce the same changes in the crystal
structure of olivine as high water activity at lower pressures. |

Minerals Are Key To Earthquakes Deep In The Earth
Haemyeong Jung, Harry W. Green II and Larissa Dobrzhinetskaya of the University of California at Riverside, point out that while it is impossible to break anything by normal brittle fracture at pressures higher than those found at only a few 10s of kilometers (km) deep, earthquakes occur continuously at depths close to 700 km. |

| We are interested in studying physical properties of minerals and rocks in the crust and mantle. We do experiments at high pressure and high temperature to understand how minerals and rocks are formed and have deformed under high pressure and temperature. We also study natural rocks collected in the field over the world. Combining experimental studies and field work, we try to understand our live planet Earth. |
