How to use Japanese with English Windows

2. How to install Asian Fonts

Before starting any further, we have to enable the Asian Functions, i.e. Japanese. I will try to explain with graphics, which will help computer novices to follow easily.

There are two kinds of operating environments you have, so please choose the one that is the most appropriate for you.
  1. When you have Windows 95 or Windows 98.

You need to install Global Ime.

  2. When you have Windows 2000:

In this case, you may think that you have all the kinds of Windows language versions.

You cannot use Global Ime. That is because it has its own way, MS-IME 2000 included in Windows 2000. You have to enable it and install it from the control panel.

First of all, open control panel [start-> settings -> control Panel] like Fig.[1]

    [Fig. 1] Enable Control Panel

If you can see the Control Panel, please click on Regional Options like Fig.[2]

I have already setup my computer to use Japanese and Korean. So, what you see may be a little bit different from the sample window. However, If you want to install Japanese only, then just check Japanese only, similar to Fig.[3]. If the system asks you for more, then just follow it.

    [Fig. 3] Regional Options

If you click on set default button like Fig[3], then you will have Fig[4]

    [Fig. 4] Regional Options

Please select Japanese like Fig. [4], then click on Apply button and the "OK" button on Fig [3].

O.K. We have to complete one more step to set up MS-IME 2000.

If you click on the "Add" button like Fig. [5], then you will have an 'Add Input Locale' window Fig. [6]. At this point, you can add as much as you want. I will put Japanese and then Korean. You will end up with something like Fig [7].

Now, you can see something like Fig. [7]. I added the Korean and Japanese IMEs, as you can see.

You are all done. Let's find out how to type with Word 2000. To do Japanese, or any other Asian word processing, you have to have Word 2000 and have to install any kinds of input method, which I mentioned above. With Word 97, you can read Asian documents, but you cannot type in with English Windows.
