4. How to put Hurigana (Rubi)

  1. General Information for Hurigana (Rubi)
  2. Furigana are the letters written on the top of kanji. It is also called rubi because England's favorite Rubi font has the same size as the conventional size of furigana.

You might think that you can only put furigana on your Japanese documents with expensive Japanese word processors. However, you can just do it with what you have already.

I will show you how you do it with Word 2000. According to my experience, Word 2000 is more accurate than Ichitaro 9.0 and even Jim Breen's WWWJDIC. If you cannot believe it, just try to do some evaluation on your own.

To use furigana, I just follow what the Word help menu suggests ( Please use the help file as much as you can. This file contains fuge information). Fig. [10]

As of now, however, I cannot find the Asian layout from format. Don't worry. This may not happen to you. I have a brand new computer form Dell, so I have my Word 2000, which is setup by Dell for American users. That is the reason I cannot find the entry Fig. [11].

I will show you how to install the missing component step by step.

  3. Install Asian Layout from Word2000 CD
  4. If you can find Phonetic Guide Like Fig [18], then go to section 4.4. . If you have a enough space on your hard drive, I strongly recommend just follow the steps. This might save your time in the future and you can especially stay away from problems like not finding your Office 2000 CD.

Once you install everything on your computer, you just need to use it without getting the message "Place your CD in the CD tray". Since new computers are shipped with huge hard drives, I strongly suggest Full Installation . It will save you time. Just believe me.

Place your Office2000 or Word2000 CD in the computer, and then you should see Fig [12] automatically. If not, then go to CD and double click on the setup icon.

If you have a limited space left, just go to section 4.3. The step is basically the same, but you will be asked more questions.
