This course provides an introduction to Sino-Korean prose literature and its related researches. We will cover all of the various genres of Sino-Korean prose, from the period when Sino-Korean was introduced until the end of the Joseon Dynasty, as well as works corresponding to each genre. Thus, the students will come to understand the characteristics of each genre. We will also establish research methods suitable for each genre, and the students will attempt to analyze and interpret works according to those methods. At the end of the semester, they will be called upon to give an interpretation of Sino-Korean prose based on such aspects as criticism, style, and subject. |

The goal of this course is to gain an understanding of the whole of oral poetry (such as national foundation epics, shaman songs, folk songs, and pansori), of the process of transmission, and of its literary characteristics. Through an approach based on a variety of theories and comparison with other oral poetry, we will examine similarities and differences and uncover the significance of oral poetry. We will examine existing research, which analyzes and interprets existing works and defines the transmission process and the literary and generic characteristics of each genre, analyzing the problems in this research, establishing a methodology appropriate for the actual materials, and then attempting to study actual works according to this methodology. |

The goal of this course is to prepare students for independent study in Sino-Korean poetry. In this course, they will examine existing research methods that analyze and interpret Sino-Korean poetry, identify problems found in those methods and establish a research method that corresponds to the actual work. They will also actively employ that method to conduct research in the poetic works. |

In this course, we will examine the aspects and characteristics of a variety of poetic works and genres, from ancient poems through the late Joseon period, examine existing research on these subjects, and diagnose the problems in this research, enabling students to carry out research on poetry on their own. Also, rules of versification such as meter and form are more important to poetry than prose, and thus we will deal with these as well. We will also study how the aspects and characteristics of classical poetry have influenced and been carried on in modern poetry. |

In this way, students will develop their own methodologies and learn how to study classical full-length novels. An examination of the process of development in Korean classical novels will also foster the development of a comprehensive perspective on Korean classical novels. |

In this course, students will study the heritage of Korean tales, such as myths, legends, and folk tales, familiarize themselves with the methods of collecting these tales, and also examine the existing research on these tales. We will examine the ontological aspects of Korean tales, determine how these have been handed down and adapted throughout history, attempt analysis and interpretation of tales from a number of viewpoints, and study the methods and theories of categorization and systematization of tales. In the process, we will also study how tales have influenced and been influenced by other genres of classical literature. Also, we will not only be studying Eastern literature, but comparing Korean tales with Western tales, shedding light on both the uniqueness and universality of Korean tales. |

As we examine existing research methodologies, we will diagnose problems in these methodologies highlighted by interpretation of individual works and the process of development of classical short stories. We will then establish a research methodology appropriate to the reality of the genre, applying this to the study of actual works and thus reaching the goal of helping students develop the ability to perform independent research. |

Korean classical texts exist independently from those of other countries, but they also exist as a part of East Asian classical texts as a whole and have organic relationships with each other. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate Korean classical prose in the context of the history of East Asian literature. This subject will be focusing on comparing Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Japanese classical prose. |

Students in this course will conduct their own research and arrive at their own conclusions, dealing in-depth with authors deemed important in literary history or uncovering worthwhile authors who have so far been ignored. There are many classical literary works whose author¡¯s are unknown, and discovering the authors of these works is a possible research task. The goal of the course is to comprehend the relationship between author and work from a variety of viewpoints and perspectives, to shed light on the unique characteristics of a single author and that author¡¯s works, and to establish a methodology for studying authors.
